Interactive visualization for the active learning classroom

Abstract: Engaging students in the learning process has been shown to be an effective means for education. Several methods have been proposed to achieve this engagement for computer science and other disciplines. Active learning is one such technique that incorporates interactive classroom activities to reinforce concepts and involve the students. Visualizations of computer science concepts such as algorithm animations can be used for these activities. To be most effective in this environment, they need to be designed a… Show more

“…Recommendations from the ICT education literature include increasing the use of small group class activities (Barker et al, 2009;Powell, 2008). Small group activities provide students with opportunities to undertake more active learning, addressing the boredom issue (Schweitzer & Brown, 2007), but also to increase levels of interaction with other students and faculty. Increasing this interaction reduces the likelihood of students feeling disconnected from the teaching and learning environment and makes it easier for them to ask for support when they need it.…”

“…Previously our people were at the no viewing engagement level, since no visualization tool was used. In order to contain high interactivity [3], this sytem was developed to enable users to control the execution of algorithms forward and backward, it allows them to configure the parameters of algorithm before starting an execution, and it makes it possible for them to follow the result of every operation in any time. Security already exists and to define which characteristics should such system have in order to be successfully used as an educational aid.…”
