Abstract:Intercalation is the key phenomenon taking place in lithium-ion batteries: while its thermodynamics sets the equilibrium voltage of active materials, solid-state diffusion of intercalated lithium determines the rate at which the battery can operate. This study revisits the thermodynamics of intercalation by treating the active material as a binary mixture of filled and empty sites, thus relating the equilibrium potential to the chemical potential difference of intercalated lithium. By setting a reference to un… Show more

scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
