Intercultural Learning via Instant Messenger Interaction

Abstract: This paper reports on a qualitative study investigating the viability of instant messenger (IM) interaction to facilitate intercultural learning in a foreign language class. Eight students in a Chinese as a foreign language (CFL) class participated in the study. Each student was paired with a native speaker (NS) of Chinese, and each pair collaborated on eight intercultural-learning tasks over a 2-month period through IM. Data were collected through an ethnographic survey, intercultural sensitivity scale, follo… Show more

“…Being an emergent area of research, an increasing number of empirical studies concerning telecollaboration and eTLL have been published in recent years, exploring intercultural aspects of eTLL (e.g. Jin & Erben, 2007), negotiation of meaning (Bower & Kawaguchi, 2011;Bueno-Alastuey, 2013;Sotillo, 2005;Ware & O'Dowd, 2008;Yilmaz & Granena, 2010), task design (Hampel, 2006;O'Dowd & Ware, 2009;Wang, 2007), learner perspectives (Lee, 2004;Tian & Wang, 2010;Wang & Chen, 2012), or the role of autonomy and motivation in the context of eTLL (Appel & Gilabert, 2002;Appel & Mullen, 2000;Ushioda, 2000).…”

“…Results of the study showed that the project provided the students with opportunities to interact with other CFL learners, and it improved the students' motivation. Other related studies investigated the impact of integrating CMC technologies into Chinese language learning on students' interactional skills and cultural knowledge (Chang, 2007;Jin & Erben, 2007). A few studies have focused narrowly on examining how to use technology to facilitate Chinese character recognition and character writing (e.g., Ping & Jen, 2005), but these are out of the scope of this study.…”

“…Research findings revealed that in addition to linguistic and pragmatic gains (Kinginger & Belz, ), students gained cross‐cultural perspectives through critical reflection and interacting with NSs (Abrams, ; Liaw, ; O'Dowd, ). For example, the results of the study conducted by Jin and Erben () showed that students of Chinese developed greater inter‐cultural sensitivity and showed respect for cultural differences through an online exchange via instant messenger. The process of analyzing and reflecting on native informants’ perspectives enables students as outsiders to learn about the cultural framework governing the what, how, and why of insiders’ expressions in everyday interactions.…”
