Interdigital Involvement in a Case of Primary Cutaneous Canine Histoplasmosis in Japan

Abstract: A 5-year-old male Siberian husky bred outdoor in Tokyo had a swollen paw with interdigital granulomatous lesions in the left hindlimb. The dog had no apparent pulmonary or gastrointestinal involvement. Histopathological analysis of the skin lesions demonstrated yeast-like organisms predominantly within macrophages. Sequence analysis of fungal ribosome RNA gene isolated from a paraffin sample revealed a 100% homology with the teleomorph of Histoplasma capsulatum. The present case may support the concept of prim… Show more

“…In Japan, the former studies demonstrated that canine histoplasmosis could be cutaneous in origin, including dogs with surgical wounds contaminated with the organism [11] , [12] . Moreover, the preceding studies found that cutaneous lesions of histoplasmosis were confined to the interdigital regions of the dog's paws [13] , [14] . These case reports might support that H. capsulatum was possible to infect animals via percutaneous inoculation.…”

“…Recently, however, autochthonous cases have been reported in humans [13]. Seven cases of canine histoplasmosis have been reported in Japan [12,17,18,20,22]. In addition, Murata et al have compared canine cases with worldwide human and equine cases with respect to partial sequences on the internal transcribed spacer (ITS1/ 2) regions of the ribosomal DNA genes [17].…”

“…In addition, the detection of the gene sequence from the pus sample of case 1 and the coincidence of the sequences between the tissue and the pus samples of the previously reported case by Nishifuji et al . [9] indicate that a pus sample obtained non-invasively can be useful and adequate for the molecular biological diagnosis of histoplasmosis.…”
