Interface driven domain-independent modeling architecture for “soft-commissioning” and “reality in the loop”

Abstract: As industrial manufacturing and automation systems grow in complexity, there is a need for control software engineering support. Soft-Commissioning and Reality in the Loop (RIL) are two novel approaches which allow coupling simulation models to real world entities and allow the analyst to pre-commission and test the behavior of a system, before it is completely built in reality. To be flexible and fast in building up a simulation model fulfilling the requirements of Soft-Commissioning and RIL there is a need f… Show more

“…According to Auinger et al [AV1], there are four situations characterizing the testing and debugging of PLC-based control software. Extended to our context, Figure 2 exposes the corresponding four possible combinations between "reality" and "simulation".…”

“…VC is used during the planning phase of production lines in order to improve their layout in a prototypedriven fashion while avoiding the hardware cost of physical prototypes. The concept of VC went hand in hand with the development of first computer-aided design techniques and was initially named "soft-commissioning" by Auinger et al [5]. Over time, a couple of commercial software solutions for VC emerged.…”

“…Emulation is also considered as a certain phase within testing process of a controlled system. The development of a complex system (eg a container terminal), which is controlled by a separate control system (eg a TOS), may include one or more of the following phases, which aim to test the system during different design stages (Auinger et al, 1999).…”

“…Emulation does not replace traditional ways of software testing (completely), but adds on, for complex testing (Auinger et al, 1999). In Table 1, the differences are listed.…”
