Foot morphology evaluation techniques are commonly used to evaluate foot abnormalities. The foot is essential for keeping the biomechanical performance of the lower extremities. It is responsible for the support of body balance and stability during gait. For the qualitative examination of foot morphology, many podoscopes have been designed. However, these podoscopes are mainly expensive, complex to operate, and have low accessibility. As a consequence the goal of this research was to create a simple, low-cost podoscope to assess the plantar footprint. In addition to providing a visual representation of the supporting regions. The proposed system enables accurate estimation of clinical indexes of foot deformities. With bare feet, bipedal support, and orthostatic posture, the participant was placed on the podoscope. Doom camera was used to capture the image of the plantar of the foot, and the data was sent to a computer via LAN connection. Based on image processing techniques, the proposed podoscope can automatically estimate the Arch Index, the Chippaux-Smirak Index, the Staheli Index, and Wejsflog's index.Ten samples were tested by the proposed podoscope, and the calculated parameters defining foot deformities are presented. The proposed podoscope appears to have the advantages of simplicity, being portable, inexpensive enabling rapid and precise footprint assessment with correct diagnoses, as well as a record for future assessments, and being economically viable in countries with people having low socio-economic status.

Objective To determine the prevalence of ankle sprains and its associated factors in athletes. Methods This was a cross sectional descriptive study conducted among a random sample of 107 athletes. The subjects were recruited from 6 different associations in Sousse, Tunisia. Demographic, medical and foot characteristics were collected using a medical file completed by a validated, self administered questionnaire to verify ankle instability. All components of this study were approved by a research ethic committee, and all participants gave informed consent at every stage. Data entry and analysis were performed using SPSS 20 Software. The level of significance was set at p <0.05. ResultsThe prevalence of ankle sprain was 71%. The associated factors were; the weight (p=0.033), the type of sport (p=0.038), the profile of the athlete (p=0.006), the unipodal static balance (p= 0.006), the limitation of the joint mobility (p=10-6), the ligament laxity (p<0.05), the muscular force especially the eversor muscle (the long fibular) (p<0.05) and the inversor muscle (the posterior tibial) (p<0.05) and the ankle instability (p<0.05). Conclusion Ankle sprains remain a frequent trauma in Tunisia. This injury must be taken into consideration and treated with a multidisciplinary approach (physicians, podiatrists, physiotherapists and physical trainers...) in order to lower its occurrence.

Musculoskeletal disorders of the foot are a common complaint in the population. It has been found a flatfoot prevalence of 13.6% in young adults and a prevalence of 26.62% in adults between 42 and 91 years. Different non-invasive techniques can identify the type of foot by analyzing the soles of the feet, such as the Chippaux-Smirak index (CSI). Although CSI is a non-invasive technique, it is performed manually, and the intervention of an expert is necessary to give a clinical opinion. The use of automatic systems is an alternative. This article introduces a machine learning-based tool that permits the identification of foot types. The proposal employs a wrapper feature selection mechanism to select the subset of features that improves the classification. This task is considered from an optimization perspective, and the optimal subset is chosen using metaheuristic algorithms. Eight algorithms used in the optimization are compared, and an increase in the Accuracy of the K-nearest neighbors (KNN) classifier is observed from 73.5% to 94.7%. Of the 39 total features proposed in the dataset, only 10 features are considered significant. The significance of the characteristics implies that they have an effect on the morphology of the foot. If they are considered in treatments to minimize this disease, it can reduce their development costs.
