Interface metaphor design and instant messaging for older adults

Abstract: InstantMessaging is currently not widely adopted among older computer users. An investigation has therefore been conducted into the use of Instant Messaging by older computer novices, with particular emphasis on the use of an alternative metaphor in the user interface to try to produce a more usable and acceptable solution for older adults. Two messenger interfaces (a traditional one and an experimental alternative) were designed for the study and compared in use by older computer novices, through measurement … Show more

“…These changes can require users to learn new interactions, something that can be easier for some users than others and can be a particular challenge for older users. This has led many comparative studies between older adults, typically classed as older than 65 years of age, and younger generations [24][25][26][27][28][29].…”

“…These participants were all born before 1953, so each was over 65 years of age. The literature review has stated about the potential challenges that can be faced about the individuality of older adults as they age-that is, that specific older users or groups of older users may have different requirements that other older user groups [24][25][26][27][28][29]. As such, these interviews are vital to allow us to establish the experience and needs of our specific group of older users [37].…”

“…Focusing on the interface, the study [36] proposes an adaptation of the chat's interface for being used by older adults which includes a user representation using more lifelike characters. From the point of view of cognitive disabilities, the Messenger Visual supports pictogram-based communications [37].…”
