Interferometry-based measurements of oil-film thickness

Abstract: Measurement of the thickness of thin lubricant films separating rotating surfaces in elastohydrodynamic experiments presents some challenging problems. The nature of the experimental apparatus inhibits the use of most commonly applied interferometric phase measurement methods. Also the absolute thickness of the separating film must be determined, as opposed to relative distances that would be sufficient in most other measurement scenarios where interferometry methods are used. In this paper, computer-based ana… Show more

“…Therefore, the friction coefficient is then calculated from the normal force and the friction force. The central film thickness is obtained by optical interferometry through the wavelength of the light returned from the central plateau of the contact [40]. The glass disc can be tested up to approximately 0.7 GPa of maximum Hertz pressure and the ball specimen presents a high-grade surface finish.…”

“…Full details of methods on how to use HSV and the H channel in particular for film thickness measurements can be found in [10][11][12][13]. Here only the main aspects are reported for understanding the methodologies used in the programme specifically realised for fast processing of image series from experiments under transient conditions.…”

“…Since multidimensional phase unwrapping is a task that occurs in various applications, such as magnetic resonance imaging or radar interferometry, various rather complex algorithms have been developed for it in the past. For example, the algorithm presented in [14] had received par-ticular attention and was an important basis for the further developments conducted in [10,12]. Several versions of the algorithms found in the literature have been implemented in the Matlab environment and tested with interference images obtained with the experimental apparatus described in the following (e.g., [15]).…”
