Interferon α-2b spray shortened viral shedding time of SARS-CoV-2 Omicron variant: An open prospective cohort study

Abstract: BackgroundThe Omicron SARS-CoV-2 variant has spread quickly worldwide due to its effects on virus transmission and vaccine effectiveness. Interferon(IFN) has been shown to have a protective effect against SARS-CoV because of its broad antiviral activity. This study aimed to analyze the treatment effects of IFN α-2b spray in virus clearance of the Omicron SARS-CoV-2 variant.MethodsWe examined the effectiveness and safety of IFN α-2b spray in Shanghai, China, with participants infected with the Omicron SARS-CoV-… Show more

“…Nowadays, the global interferons market is valued at USD 8.5 billion (Interferons Global Market Report 2023 ). Human leukocyte interferon (hINF) alpha 2b is one of the important biopharmaceuticals, as it is included in antiviral therapy of chronic hepatitis C and B (Gull et al 2019 ; Ye and Chen 2021 ) and other viruses, including recently emerged pandemic virus SARS-CoV2 (Pandit et al 2021 ; Xu et al 2022 ), treatment of multiple sclerosis, as well as complex anticancer therapy against hairy cell leukemia, melanoma, follicular lymphoma, renal cell carcinoma, and several others (Ghaffari et al 2021 ; Ningrum 2014 ). It has also been shown that hINF alpha 2b produced in plant systems reduced the level of the repair enzyme MGMT in Hep-2 cancer cells, thereby increasing the sensitivity of cancer cells to chemotherapy (Nidoieva et al 2019 ).…”
