Interim and temporary restoration of teeth during endodontic treatment

Abstract: One of the main aims of endodontic treatment is to eliminate micro-organisms from within the root canal system. A further aim is to prevent the ingress of any further bacteria during and after treatment. These aims are usually achieved by various means and stages throughout the treatment process. Endodontic treatment is usually performed on teeth that have lost the integrity of the external coronal tooth structure which has allowed bacteria to enter the tooth and ultimately reach the pulp space. “…Its use transforms a complex endodontic access cavity preparation into a simple class I cavity, thus assisting the between-visit sealing quality of some temporary filling materials (3). The effect of stainless steel bands on cusp flexure of maxillary premolar teeth has been investigated (6), and it was concluded that the bands decreased cusp flexure by half and increased fracture resistance when the tooth was placed under load.…”

“…A temporary restoration has been defined as the restoration placed within an endodontic access cavity that has been cut through an interim restoration or through tooth structure. The access cavity shape, size, and position will be determined by the overall anatomy of the tooth being treated and, to an even greater extent, by the anatomy of the pulp chamber and root canal system (3). It will also be influenced by the operator's experience and skill.…”

“…An interim restoration has been defined as a restoration that is placed after the pre-existing coronal restoration has been removed as part of the investigation procedure at the commencement of endodontic treatment (3). The extent, size, and cavity design of the interim restoration will be determined by the extent of the previous restoration as well as by any caries and cracks that have been removed.…”

“…3 Some papers have reported that the temporary restorations facilitate rubber dam placement and temporary sealing of tooth during endodontic treatment. 4,5 Several techniques have been proposed for the temporary restorations, such as temporary crown…”
