Interior structure of quality control center on the low‐voltage side for customized power quality service in FRIENDS

Abstract: SUMMARYThe authors have proposed the Flexible Reliable and Intelligent Electric eNergy Delivery System (FRIENDS) as a future electric power distribution system. In order to realize FRIENDS it is indispensable to design the concrete interior structure of the key facility, the Quality Control Center. This paper proposes an interior structure and control schemes for the Quality Control Center from the viewpoint of customized power quality service, which is one of the most important objectives of FRIENDS. The vali… Show more

“…In this study, this task was planned to be accomplished by using thyristor switches (TS). However, considering the TS disadvantage that its connection losses are higher than those of mechanical switches (MS), for the purposes of this study we selected hybrid transfer switches (HTS) [3] made by Mitsubishi Electric Co., Ltd. shown in Fig. 2.…”

“…Structurally, QCCs consist of power electronics devices, DGs, and control equipment. One of their main functions is to provide a selection of electric power qualities matching the customers' needs as closely as possible [3]. Another function (so-called power conditioning [4]) makes it possible to absorb fluctuations of terminal loads and DG outputs, thus mitigating their effect on the system.…”

“…1, many QCCs [5,6] of appropriate capacity are installed in each different power supply area, and QCCs are connected by a mesh of high-voltage distribution lines so as to receive power from multiple power substations. Customers receive power directly from the QCCs.…”

“…Regarding FRIENDS, there have been wide-range fundamental studies, including such topics as the detailed configuration of QCC [5,6], the configuration of high-volt-age distribution networks [7,8], the economic analysis of unbundled power quality services [9], and so on. The authors have investigated methods for optimal configuration of the FRIENDS network which is a large-scale combinatorial optimization problem and is difficult to solve by conventional methods.…”

“…1 and called a Quality Control Center (QCC) that is set up in several locations between the distribution transformer and consumers. The authors have already analyzed the interior structure, which is based on a circuit configuration using UPS (uninterruptible power supplies) and control methods [3,4]. In the current paper, the authors propose a new QCC interior structure [called a UPQC (Unified Power Quality Controller) QCC] based on the circuit configuration for a Unified Power Flow Controller (UPFC).…”
