Interlaminar Reinforcement of Laminated Composites by Addition of Oriented Whiskers in the Matrix

Abstract: To reinforce the interlaminar of laminated composites, a novel method was proposed by the authors [1]. In this method, whiskers were added in the matrix resin to reinforce the interlaminar, and the orientation of the whiskers were magnetically con trolled to improve the reinforcement efficiency. In this paper, mode I (cleavage) inter laminar fracture toughness was shown to be remarkably improved as a result of the addi tion of oriented whiskers to the direction of the plate thickness. Whereas, mode II (inplane… Show more

“…4(b), it is defined as interleaving Ud-FRP prepreg (as material A) and short fiber layer, particle layer, or high toughening adhesive layer (as material B) (Sela et al, 1989;Carlsson and Aksoy, 1991;Aksoy and Carlsson, 1992;Kim et al, 1992;Sue et al, 1993;Odagiri et al, 1996;Yamashita et al, 1989Yamashita et al, , 1992Hu, 1994, 1998a,b;Ozdil and Carlsson, 1992). Its purpose is to increase the interlaminar properties in the FRP composites while intralaminar strength decreases compared with material A.…”

“…As indicated above, recently a main focus of the advanced composite materials development is to improve the mechanical characteristics of laminated structural materials. Many studies (Ishai et al, 1988;Sela et al, 1989;Carlsson and Aksoy, 1991;Aksoy and Carlsson, 1992;Kim et al, 1992;Sue et al, 1993;Odagiri et al, 1996;Sankar and Sharma, 1997;Sankar and Dharmapuri, 1998;Dransfield et al, 1998;Mouritz et al, 1999;Yamashita et al, 1989Yamashita et al, , 1992Hu, 1994, 1998a,b) have been conducted based on the hybrid method to increase a resistance against the interlaminar toughness that cannot be obtained with only conventional composite materials. The objective of the hybrid technique is to enhance mechanical properties of expensive composites by using relatively cheap materials and keeping simplicity in the manufacturing process.…”

“…Laminated SiC-based ceramic composites reinforced by SiC whiskers exhibit good mechanical properties than their respective monolithic materials, and have received much attention from both the academics and the manufacturing industries [1][2][3].…”

“…The ex-situ concept has successfully been demonstrated for improvement in impact damage resistance for a number of prepreg-grade composites. 12 Yamashita et al 13 added SiC whiskers in the matrix resin to reinforce the interlaminar, and the orientation of the whiskers was magnetically controlled to improve the reinforcement efficiency. Mode I (cleavage) interlaminar fracture toughness was shown to be remarkably improved as a result of the addition of oriented whiskers to the direction of the plate thickness.…”
