Interleukin 13 on Microglia is Neurotoxic in Lipopolysaccharide-injected Striatumin vivo

Abstract: To explore the potential function of interleukin-13 (IL-13), lipopolysaccharide (LPS) or PBS as a control was unilaterally microinjected into striatum of rat brain. Seven days after LPS injection, there was a significant loss of neurons and microglial activation in the striatum, visualized by immunohistochemical staining against neuronal nuclei (NeuN) and the OX-42 (complement receptor type 3, CR3), respectively. In parallel, IL-13 immunoreactivity was increased as early as 3 days and sustained up to 7 days po… Show more

“…Interleukin-13 (IL-13), functions in the CNS as an anti-inflammatory cytokine and is expressed by reactive microglia and can produce both beneficial and harmful effects on the local environment [ 28 ]. The IL-13 inflammatory pathway has been shown to modulate potassium calcium-activated channel subfamily N member 4 (KCNN4) which codes for K Ca 3.1 [ 29 ].…”

“…Increased IL-13 release from reactive microglia has also been shown to be neurotoxic following lipopolysaccharide injection. In this model, increased IL-13 immunoreactivity was further associated with astrocyte damage and blood brain barrier (BBB) disruption (Hong et al, 2022). Thus, it is essential to consider the function of IL-13 in the context of specific disorders and disease states, including the state of disease progression, and the specific function of increased NAc IL-13 in the EcoHIV model remains a promising area for future study.…”

“…While this may protect neurons from excitotoxic death following brain injury [56], this effect could produce cognitive impairments akin to those observed in HAND [57]. Increased IL-13 release from reactive microglia has also been shown to be neurotoxic following lipopolysaccharide injection, which was further associated with astrocyte damage and blood-brain barrier (BBB) disruption [58]. Thus, it is essential to consider the function of IL-13 in the context of specific disorders and disease states, including the state of disease progression.…”
