Intermediate-term trends in serum levels of metal ions after hip resurfacing arthroplasty

Abstract: BackgroundThe potential risks associated with hip resurfacing arthroplasty (HRA) are controversial and underestimated. The aim of this study was to explore intermediate-term trends for the levels of cobalt (Co), chromium (Cr), and molybdenum (Mo) ions after HRA.MethodsForty patients who underwent HRA from October 2005 to December 2010 were recruited to this study. The serum levels of metal ions were examined preoperatively and 3, 12, 24, and 60 months after surgery. Trends and differences in levels of metal io… Show more

“…Cobalt and chromium levels were measured according to the method described by Savarino et al 49 and Jiang et al 50 Venous blood samples were collected from the antecubital vein of fasting patients in the morning. Trying to avoid metal contamination during the blood sample collection and analysis was done by discarding the first 5 mL of the collected blood to avoid contamination from the needle, and collecting the samples in metal-free vacutainer tubes.…”

“…Of those that have, none have identified a significant relationship between BMI and metal ion levels. 9,17 These studies were limited in their analyses because they included either a mixture of HRA and THA implant designs or patients with bilateral implants.…”

“…Many previous studies have looked at cohorts with mixed MoM implant designs. 8,9 However, this study narrows the focus by examining the effect of obesity and other covariates on blood metal ion levels and ALTR in the ASR Hip System specifically. Furthermore, we provide data separately on these relationships in both the ASR HRA and ASR XL THA cohorts.…”

“…Hip MoM implants, including MoMHRAs, have also been used to treat bilateral hip arthritis [ 11 14 ]. Increased metal ion levels have been correlated in some studies with the development of ARMD and serum metal ion levels are higher in patients with bilateral compared with unilateral MoMHRAs [ 14 17 ]. In a previous study, we reported pathological findings in a small series of patients with bilateral MoMHRAs that developed bilateral pseudotumours [ 18 ].…”
