Peripheral arterial disease (PAD) is a long-term devastating condition characterised by obstruction or narrowing of the arteries, mainly the arteries that supply blood to the lower limbs. PAD involves atherosclerosis of the abdominal aorta, iliac and lower extremity arteries, causing intermittent claudication (IC) (a cramp-like pain in the legs and/or buttocks on exertion which is relieved by resting), ischaemic rest pain, ischaemic ulceration, and limb loss. PAD is associated with significant reduction in quality of life and is a substantial public health problem. Unfortunately, the 10-year mortality of PAD is about 50% and the majority of patients with PAD are asymptomatic until the advanced stage. As a result, PAD is underreported, under-diagnosed and sub-optimally treated.
