Intermittent Light and Light Intensity Effects on Broilers in Light-Proof Pens ,

Abstract: Five experiments were conducted in light-proof pens to compare various intermittent lighting programs with continuous light and with two light intensities on broilers. In general, growth was satisfactory only if the lights-off period did not exceed 2 hours and the lights-on period apgroached that of the lights-off period in length. A program with a repeating cycle of lights-on for 1 hour followed by lights-off for 2 hours, when initiated at one day of age, gave equal growth to continuous light; feed conversion… Show more

“…1 to 100 lx was consistent with the findings of Barott and Pringle (1951), Skoglund and Palmer (1962), Weaver and Siegel (1968), and Dorminey and Nakaue (1977). Cherry and Barwick (1962) observed different effects of light intensity on body weight depending on sex of the birds and their rearing conditions.…”

“…Cherry and Barwick (1962) observed different effects of light intensity on body weight depending on sex of the birds and their rearing conditions. It would appear from the present study and those of others (Cherry and Barwick, 1962;Weaver and Siegel, 1968;Dorminey and Nakaue, 1977) that feed conversion is unaffected by light intensities ranging from .5 to 30 lx, but may, however, be slightly improved under lower intensities when comparisons are made between intensities ranging from .1 to 100 lx.…”

“…Broiler chickens have usually been kept on a continuous or nearly continuous lighting (CL) schedule so as to maximize feed intake and growth rate. However it has been reported that performance of broiler chickens is improved by intermittent lighting (IL) schedules compared with such CL (Savory, 1976;Dorminey and Nakaue, 1977;Cave, 1981;Deaton et al, 1981). The broiler chickens reared under IL schedules showed a temporary growth delay after change at an early age from CL to IL and manifested catch-up growth during the subsequent period (Renden et al, 1991;Buyse et al, 1996;Ohtani and Tanaka, 1997a,b).…”
