Intermittent Obstruction Resulting from Multiple Intestinal Webs

Abstract: Intestinal webs are a rare cause of bowel obstruction. A case of a 32-year-old man with multiple intestinal webs causing intermittent, partial bowel obstruction is described. The webs were initially detected with capsule endoscopy. The patient was treated with intraoperative endoscopy and balloon dilation. At early follow-up, no recurrence of his symptoms was evident.

“…Colonic web/diaphragm disease is a very rare entity; its incidence is unknown and is a very rare cause of obstructive symptoms in pediatric patients and adults. 1,2 While diaphragm disease is more common in the pediatric population, it remains a very rare occurrence. 1 In pediatric patients, webs are commonly congenital and most likely localized in the small bowel.…”

“…1 In the adult population, diaphragm disease is commonly associated with the use of NSAIDs and is much more common in the small bowel as opposed to the colon. [2][3][4] As a corollary, finding a colonic web/diaphragm should prompt treating physicians to consider NSAID cessation in that patient population. 3 Most of these lesions are associated with NSAID use chronically over the time frame of years.…”
