Internal hydrocephalus combined with pachygyria in a wild-born brown bear cub

Abstract: An abandoned wild-born male brown bear (Ursus arctos) cub of the year was found and subsequently placed in a zoo. At 7 months of age, the cub showed first signs of ataxia, and at 13 months of age, it was unable to move the hind legs and exhibited outbursts of aggressive behavior and self-mutilation. The animal was euthanized, and necropsy revealed alterations of the brain with obviously flattened gyri, profound enlargement of both lateral ventricles and considerable accumulation of cerebrospinal fluid, disrupt… Show more

“…Lissencephaly is infrequently reported in the veterinary literature and this is the first report, to the authors’ knowledge, of lissencephaly in an Australian Kelpie. Lissencephaly without concurrent malformations has been described in five Lhasa Apso dogs, a small (5 kg) mixed‐breed dog, two Korat cats and a brown bear . Lissencephaly with concurrent cerebellar hypoplasia has been more commonly described and reports include a litter of Irish Setters, a litter of Wire‐haired Fox Terriers, a Samoyed, multiple Churra lambs and a goat .…”

“…In cats, lissencephaly with microencephaly has been observed in the Korat cat breed (18). Other neuronal migration disorders observed in veterinary medicine are subcortical band heterotopia in a California sea lion (3) and pachygyria with internal hydro cephalus in a wild-born brown bear cub (9). In both cases the genetic background has not been explored.…”
