Internal plasma potential measurements of a Hall thruster using plasma lens focusing

Abstract: Magnetic field topology has been found to be a central design concern for high-efficiency Hall thrusters. For future improvements in Hall thruster design, it is necessary to better understand the effects that magnetic field topology has on the internal plasma structure. The Plasmadynamics and Electric Propulsion Laboratory's High-speed Axial Reciprocating Probe system is used in conjunction with a floating emissive probe to map the internal plasma potential structure of the NASA-173Mv1 Hall thruster ͓R. “…The simulation results in the paper agree qualitatively with the experimental results in Ref. 11 In summary, the influence of a large incidence angle of the magnetic field incidence on the electron conductive current to the anode is simulated based on a Monte Carlo model. It is shown that the electron current decreases in the case of large incidence angle.…”

“…In Ref. 11, an experiment on the effect of the magnetic field with lens focusing configuration on the thruster operation was made. The experimental results showed that a decrease in the electron current to the anode was observed when the trim coil was energized, which was corresponding to the magnetic field with focusing lens.…”

“…When the electron temperature is low or the variation of plasma density along the magnetic field is small, equipotential lines approximatively coincide with the magnetic field lines. Recent experiments by Linnell found good agreement between the equipotential lines and the magnetic field lines in the acceleration region [29]. Therefore, we adopt that the potential distribution is properly obtained by magnetic field lines in the model.…”

“…Such effect has significant implications on the plume formation and the thruster contamination aspects. It is interesting to point out that such trend is also observed experimentally [40,41,42]. …”
