Internal Solitary Waves Observed on the Continental Shelf in the Northern South China Sea From Acoustic Backscatter Data

Abstract: Internal solitary waves (ISWs) are investigated offshore of Guangdong in the northern South China Sea (SCS) using high-frequency acoustic backscatter data of 100 kHz acquired in July 2020. Simultaneous XBT profiles and satellite images are incorporated to understand their propagation, evolution, and dissipation processes in shallow water at depths less than 50 m. The water column structures revealed by acoustic backscatter data and XBT profiles are consistent with a small difference of less than 3 m. A soliton… Show more

“…The average light transmission in the BNL (68%) was comparable to that in the surface ZRP (71%). Although the BNL has been widely observed in estuaries and marginal seas (Liu et al, 2014;Du and Liu, 2017;Jia et al, 2019;Feng et al, 2021), studies of particle dynamics in the BNL on the NSCS shelf are still in progress (Gong et al, 2020;.…”

“…The hydrodynamics within the northern slope of South China Sea is characterized by strong diurnal and semidiurnal tides (Zhao, 2014). The complex topography together with the along-slope tidal currents result in the generation of internal tides (Feng et al, 2021). The water flow velocity caused by internal tides in the deep-sea continental slope can reach 0.15 m/s (Xie et al, 2018).…”

Moreover, the occurrence of some physical ocean processes, such as internal waves [37][38][39] and mesoscale eddies [40], can change hydrological and hydrodynamic parameters (temperature or salinity gradient, dissipation rate of turbulent kinetic energy, etc. ); these signals can be detected by highresolution acoustic transducers [38].…”
