International collaboration in Brazilian science: financing and impact

Abstract: The study of international collaborations can help in understanding the benefits of such relationships and aid in developing national financing policies. In this paper, the international collaboration of Brazilian scientists was studied using SciVal ® and Incites ® database, looking at its effect on the universities, financing agencies and different areas of knowledge and research topic clusters. Cluster and principal component analyses of scientometric data were carried out. While the results confirmed known … Show more

“…[15][16][17] Despite the time-lag associated with certain metrics, SciVal addresses the aforementioned issues and achieves accurate domain-wise big data analysis. [18][19][20][21] By combining several indicators, such as scholarly output, Field-Weighted Citation Impact (FWCI), citations, top percentiles of publications, topic growth, and prominence percentile, we provide an objective evaluation of research focused on CRISPR technology.…”

“…This metric helps us to understand the amount of research produced that is used to create patents. The index was very high, with values of 26,163,23,117,20,891,42,660, and 13,662 from 2010 to 2014, respectively. It has decreased in recent years, indicating a time-lag in the citation and patents' preference to cite earlier literature.…”

“…The relevance of international collaboration with researchers from Australia, Canada, the United Kingdom, and the United States has already been highlighted in previous studies (González Alcaide et al 2017;Van Leeuwen 2009;Bordons et al 2015;Moya Anegón et al 2013). According to McManus et al (2020), USA and UK are the rst and second major scienti c partners, Canada and Australia being between the 10 major partners. The goal of this study is to identify Brazilian universities and areas that bene t from international scienti c collaboration for increasing their scienti c impact as measured by the number of citations received and to assess whether that collaboration in uences the performance of Brazilian institutions in the ShanghaiRanking's Global Ranking of Academic SubjectsThe following hypotheses were delineated: a) Brazilian universities' scienti c impact, as measured by the number of citations to their published papers, bene ts from the international collaboration with Australia, Canada, the United Kingdom, and the United States. b) Brazilian universities' share of publications in higher impact journals increases through international collaboration with Australia, Canada, the United Kingdom, and the United States.…”
