“…This is largely because research projects are becoming more complex and require the expertise of people of different capabilities (Abt 2007). In addition, the trend of increasing multi-authorship is a well-established phenomenon observed on the international level (e.g., Sampson 1995;Bird 1997;Gokceoglu et al 2008). Our findings are in a good accordance with the findings of Abt (2007) and Tsay (2008).…”

“…Chiu and Ho (2007) performed a rather comprehensive analysis of world's tsunami research with similar perspectives employed in this paper, and we extend their analysis in terms of both method and scope: methodologically, we incorporate more advanced bibliometric measures (e.g., field citation scores) and analytical procedures (e.g., network analysis and author clustering); and we incorporate a larger sheer of earthquake literatures and provide substantive discussions for observed bibliometric patterns. In addition, earth science as a whole has been studied with bibliometric techniques, however specific patterns in the field of earthquake studies have been largely neglected (Gokceoglu et al 2008;Mikki 2010). Therefore, we would provide a comprehensive bibliometric analysis and substantive discussion of research progress in earthquake research.…”

“…Producing research articles has positive feedback effects for a researcher, including the increased probability of receiving research grants, being involved in research networks, and the accumulation of relevant knowledge and research capacity (Puuska 2010). It is well known that a significant percentage of all publications from a research community originate from a small percentage of all researchers in that community (Gokceoglu et al 2008;Puuska 2010;Yurtsever and Gulgoz 1999). Although the distribution of faculty by academic ranks at Akdeniz University has not significantly altered during the last 10 years, it is clear that the number of experienced faculty increased significantly, which may explain the exponential relationship between the numbers of faculty and published articles (Fig.…”

“…A minimum number of articles in indexed journals is required to apply for the process, with the number and types of publications dependent on the academic field of the applicant; similar criteria were then adopted by universities for promotion and appointment to academic positions. This process was thus a strong motivation for publishing in indexed journals and had a very significant influence on the publication output of the country (Gokceoglu et al 2008;Onder et al 2008).…”
