International manufacturing and location decisions: balancing configuration and co‐ordination aspects

Abstract: Questions on configuration and co‐ordination are seldom integrated in research on international manufacturing and location decisions. Suggests a way in which these two aspects can be linked by combining concepts from international business and manufacturing strategy. Elaborates the practical relevance of this integration in the experiences of Dutch investors locating plants in Thailand. Simultaneous attention to configuration and co‐ordination enhances the understanding of the functioning of foreign plants in … Show more

“…The choice of procedures used in production must be made among the notable techniques which are closest to perfect ones, bearing in mind the path in which product is envisaged to tow into the future. It is therefore important for the small-scale industry to recognize the area where the first-rate competition is non-existent for them as compared to the larger industry in the market place [20]. “…Several researchers into international manufacturing have elaborated on Ferdows' strategic role concept including Meijboom and Vos (1997), Vereecke and Van Dierdonck (2002), Meijboom and Voordijk (2003), and Vereecke et al (2006), seeing it as going beyond traditional one-dimensional efficiency-related (cost minimisation) considerations.…”

“…Meijboom and Vos (1997) observed that strategic role and coordination decisions are seldom integrated in practice. They use four case studies of Dutch subsidiaries in Thailand to show that strategic role decisions and co-ordination decisions are interdependent.…”

“…Initially, the purpose of the research was to test, through multiple case studies, the validity of the seminal typology of international factories proposed by Ferdows (1989). Such a research programme (Ferdows, 1989;Meijboom and Vos, 1997;Vereecke and Van Dierdonck, 2002) is usually conducted from the perspective of the investor. For example, Ferdows' multiple case studies are based on the study of the foreign subsidiaries of large US multinationals.…”
