International Physical Activity Questionnaire: 12-Country Reliability and Validity

Abstract: The IPAQ instruments have acceptable measurement properties, at least as good as other established self-reports. Considering the diverse samples in this study, IPAQ has reasonable measurement properties for monitoring population levels of physical activity among 18- to 65-yr-old adults in diverse settings. The short IPAQ form "last 7 d recall" is recommended for national monitoring and the long form for research requiring more detailed assessment.

“…Categories of alcohol use were derived from responses on the AUDIT36 by calculating the average number of drinks per week: no use (0), moderate use (1–21 for males, 1–14 for females), and heavy use (>21 for males, >14 for females). Physical activity was calculated from response to the International Physical Activity Questionnaire (IPAQ), which uses the weekly duration of self‐reported vigorous, moderate, walking, and sitting activity to calculate Metabolic Equivalent Total (MET) minutes of activity per week (MET level × minutes of activity × events per week) 37, 38…”

“…For example, the Synchronized Nutrition and Activity Program [16] measures activity relevant only to primary school children, and contains items that are not common across broad sectors of the population. The International Physical Activity Questionnaire (IPAQ) was developed to address these concerns by a group of experts in 1998 to facilitate surveillance of physical activity based on a global standard [17]. The IPAQ has since become the most widely used physical activity questionnaire [13], with two versions available: the 31 item long form (IPAQ-LF) and the 9 item short form (IPAQ-SF).…”

“…The short form records the activity of four intensity levels: 1) vigorous-intensity activity such as aerobics, 2) moderate-intensity activity such as leisure cycling, 3) walking, and 4) sitting. The original authors recommended the "last 7 day recall" version of the IPAQ-SF for physical activity surveillance studies [17], in part because the burden on participants to report their activity is small.…”
