International survey on gestational diabetes

Abstract: Our survey highlights the international variability that exists in the screening, diagnosis, and management of women with GDM. These differences impact on true prevalence rates and may underestimate the costs of this disease. The recommendation to move to a single internationally accepted diagnostic algorithm may be hampered by the variation in current practice globally.

“…A contributing factor to this large variation in practices is probably the differing recommendations by both international and local scientific professional organizations. Various large surveys completed by responders from many different countries highlight the strong variability that exists internationally in screening, diagnosis and management of women with GDM [ 16 - 18 ]. Comparison between countries is very difficult due to the different diagnostic strategies and subpopulations.…”

“…An instrument development process was undertaken due to the absence of a pre‐existing, validated tool assessing the outcomes of interest. A literature review was used to find similar tools, and the survey included 15 questions adapted from existing questionnaires relating to GDM service provision and demographic characteristics. For the remaining questions, the Queensland Clinical Guideline for GDM was used to compile a list of tasks and recommendations for GDM management.…”

“…12 This is a concerning fact as elevated blood sugars in pregnancy can be detrimental to a fetal development, in some cases even fatal. As such, it is important to utilize multiple screening modalities in order to identify these complications in utero.…”
