Internationalization of Medical Education—a Scoping Review of the Current Status in the United States

Abstract: This article explores the current status of internationalization of medical education in the United States. Dominant themes of articles published from 2000 to 2018 indicate that common formats are institutional partnerships, international learning at home, and student mobility programs. Critical analysis on the basis of internationalization of higher education, recommendations, and future perspective is given.

“…The internationalization of the curriculum, seen as the "incorporation of international, intercultural, and global dimensions into the curriculum in ways that are relevant to graduates' professional practice" [42] (p. 1693), is, therefore, highly relevant for all students in all scientific fields, preparing them for professional practice in a globalized world. This centrality has been proven, for example, in the field of health, with health events such as the Ebola virus, SARS, or, more recently, the COVID-19 pandemic.…”

“…Service-learning has been a feature of higher education since the 1990s, particularly but not exclusively in the United States. It has been "coupled with concepts of social justice, civic responsibility and ethical practice" (Carrington, 2011, p.1) as part of the third mission and also, in some disciplines such as medicine and nursing, with internationalisation of curriculum and the global responsibilities of professionals (Wu et al, 2020). There is scant evidence of the impact mobile students have on the communities which host them, although there are some examples, such as those documented by Gaul (2015), Murphy et al (2014), Potts (2016), and Wood et al (2012).…”

“…Hansen et al (2020) provided evidence for the feasibility of developing a multifaceted web-wide training programme for an international trial, while Cassel and Edd (2016) reported a high degree of satisfaction and improved familiarity with the use of telepractice, and an increased comfort level working with multi-cultural populations. Internationalization has benefits such as quality improvement, provision of access, competitiveness, financial profits, and the provision of a professionally relevant education that prepares all students to be interculturally proficient professionals and citizens (Wu et al, 2020). However, it may also result in unintended consequences such as ethical dilemmas.…”
