Internet and video technology in psychotherapy supervision and training.

Abstract: The seven articles in this special section on the use of Internet and video technology represent the latest growth on one branch of the increasingly prolific and differentiated work in the technology of psychotherapy. In addition to the work presented here on video and the Internet applications to supervision and training, information technology is changing the field of psychotherapy through computer assisted therapies and virtual reality interventions.

“…These technologies now feel antiquated given the ease with which contemporary researchers can access audio and video recordings (Griggs et al, 2020; Peräkylä, 2019). The explosion of video and visual methods (Broadbent et al, 2019; Hansen, 2018; Macdonald et al, 2019; Wolf, 2011) would not have been possible without easy (and affordable) access to new and developing technologies. New frontiers are opening methodologically, including the possibility of using more computerized and machine-learning approaches to research and data analysis (Beaulieu-Jones et al, 2019; Tay, 2020).…”

“…The sustained growth and versatility of arts-based approaches to research and the ever-expanding prominence of qualitative methods makes this an exciting time to be a qualitative health researcher. Qualitative methods have a long-standing and well-established place in health research, and the expansion in the range of qualitative methods has seen increasing use of approaches to data collection which rely on more than just text-and-talk, including photovoice (Aparicio et al, 2020; Greene et al, 2018; Han & Oliffe, 2016; Hunt et al, 2018; Macdonald et al, 2019; Watchman et al, 2020), digital and other forms of storytelling (Bulk et al, 2020; de Jager et al, 2017; Douglas & Carless, 2018; Greene et al, 2018; Moreau et al, 2018; Tatano Beck, 2020), walking methodologies (Springgay & Truman, 2017), video methods (Baumann, Lhaki, & Burke, 2020; Hansen, 2018), theater methods (Bleuer et al, 2018; Erel et al, 2017; Parent et al, 2017; Torrissen & Stickley, 2018), and a range of other arts-based methods (Candy & Edmonds, 2017; Chamberlain et al, 2018; Coemans & Hannes, 2017; Hammond et al, 2018; Wolf, 2011). A recent review of arts-based methods with vulnerable populations (Coemans & Hannes, 2017) shows that researchers in this field are using an array of media across different arts modalities, although photographic-based methods dominate in the field, with theater-based methods a distant second.…”

“…A special section of Psychotherapy (Chicago, IL, USA) was devoted to video and Internet applications in psychotherapy supervision and training [14,15]. This growing trend aims to rectify deficiencies in training in resource-poor educational programs.…”

“…Confidentiality is protected through the use of only the first initial of a client's name. Wolf (2011) introduced seven articles in a special section of Psychotherapy that address the use of Internet and video technology in psychotherapy and stated "technology is driving developments in psychotherapy training" (p. 180). One of the articles, by Abbass et al (2011), cites a number of studies in which supervision of trainees was conducted via online text chats or other web-based formats.…”
