Internet-based contingency management to promote smoking cessation: A randomized controlled study

Abstract: We evaluated an Internet-based contingency management intervention to promote smoking cessation. Participants in the contingent group (n = 39) earned vouchers contingent on video confirmation of breath carbon monoxide (CO) ≤ 4 parts per million (ppm). Earnings for participants in the noncontingent group (n = 38) were independent of CO levels. Goals and feedback about smoking status were provided on participants’ homepages. The median percentages of negative samples during the intervention in the noncontingent … Show more

“…Following completion of both fMRI sessions, participants made a smoking quit attempt using an adapted internet-based CM procedure (Dallery et al, 2013), allowing for remote biochemical verification of smoking abstinence (see Supplementary Information). Briefly, participants uploaded videos of expired CO twice per day during a 21-day period (3 days baseline and 18 day quit attempt).…”

“…Data collection and treatment delivery were enabled by Mōtiv8 Systems software (Dallery, Raiff, et al, 2013) and the Mōtiv8 Group Support Forum (Meredith & Dallery, 2013; Meredith et al, 2011). CO meters (Bedfont piCO+ Smokerlyzer®) were loaned to each participant.…”

“…Cell phone and drug testing technologies allow for frequent assessment and reinforcement of alcohol and cigarette abstinence in the natural environment. These approaches are efficacious and acceptable to patients (Alessi & Petry 2013; Alessi & Rash 2017; Alessi et al, 2016; Kong 2013), as are Internet-based reinforcement procedures (Carpenter et al, 2015; Dallery & Glenn 2005; Dallery, Glenn, & Raiff 2007; Dallery, Raiff, & Grabinski 2013; Hertzberg et al, 2013; Meredith, Grabinski, & Dallery 2011; Raiff, Jarvis, Turturici, & Dallery 2013; Reynolds et al, 2015; Stoops et al, 2009). Coupling these technologies with mobile reinforcement procedures may support abstinence in real-time and lead to more effective and efficient delivery of CM, which may enhance and extend its benefits.…”
