Internet of Things for Medication Control

Abstract: The use of Radio Frequency IDentification technology (RFID) in the medical context enables drug identification but also a rapid and, of course, precise identification of patients, physicians, nurses or any other health caregiver. Combining RFID tag identification with structured and secure Internet of Things (IoT) solutions, one can establish a ubiquitous and quick access to any type of medical related records, as long as one can control and adequately secure all the Internet mediated interactions. “…Furthermore, an IoT-based smart medication dispensing system is presented, enhancing medication adherence for various medical conditions and minimizing healthcare service delays by ensuring timely and unscheduled medication based on realtime patient vitals [32]. An RFID-based IoT system is also introduced for medication control, promoting medication management for different medical needs, particularly in the context of Ambient Assisted Living for Older People [33]. The versatile application of IoT extends to medication management, encompassing a wide spectrum of patient requirements [23].…”

“…An example is given in [75], which provides an IoT-based intelligent packaging solution with controlled sealing employing wireless communication. Another relevant medication management system using RFID is detailed in [76], which describes a prototype implementation for medication control system. Past data gathered using the IoT network can be used to have better control on the future movement of medication using a machine learning application.…”
