The concept of smart and connected healthcare has emerged in response to the growing demand for the improvement of healthcare systems and the increasing prevalence of chronic diseases. Looking towards the future, smart healthcare holds great potential to transform the healthcare industry by providing more efficient, personalized, and accessible healthcare services. This paper delves into the concept of intelligent, interconnected, and customized healthcare systems within the Internet of Medical Things (IoMT) framework. It explores the utilization of cutting-edge technologies, including the IoMT, in conjunction with big data, cloud computing, artificial intelligence, and blockchain to provide healthcare services that are not only more efficient but also more convenient and personalized. It draws on existing literature, bibliometric data, and global marketing analysis to gain a deeper understanding of these technologies and their impact on the healthcare system. We have explored several upcoming features of the Healthcare 5.0 paradigm, which represents the next evolution in healthcare systems focusing on a more personalized and patient-centric approach. We introduce a healthcare architecture specifically designed for the IoMT that prioritizes the security considerations associated with devices. Finally, we have focused on addressing open research challenges, particularly those related to fundamental social needs, such as ensuring equitable access to smart and connected healthcare systems.

The Internet of Things (IoT) has positioned itself globally as a dominant force in the technology sector. IoT, a technology based on interconnected devices, has found applications in various research areas, including healthcare. Embedded devices and wearable technologies powered by IoT have been shown to be effective in patient monitoring and management systems, with a particular focus on pregnant women. This study provides a comprehensive systematic review of the literature on IoT architectures, systems, models and devices used to monitor and manage complications during pregnancy, postpartum and neonatal care. The study identifies emerging research trends and highlights existing research challenges and gaps, offering insights to improve the well-being of pregnant women at a critical moment in their lives. The literature review and discussions presented here serve as valuable resources for stakeholders in this field and pave the way for new and effective paradigms. Additionally, we outline a future research scope discussion for the benefit of researchers and healthcare professionals.

Machine Learning and LPWAN Based Internet of Things Applications in Healthcare Sector during COVID-19 Pandemic

Low power wide area networks (LPWAN) are comprised of small devices having restricted processing resources and limited energy budget. These devices are connected with each other using communication protocols. Considering their available resources, these devices can be used in a number of different Internet of Things (IoT) applications. Another interesting paradigm is machine learning, which can also be integrated with LPWAN technology to embed intelligence into these IoT applications. These machine learning-based applications combine intelligence with LPWAN and prove to be a useful tool. One such IoT application is in the medical field, where they can be used to provide multiple services. In the scenario of the COVID-19 pandemic, the importance of LPWAN-based medical services has gained particular attention. This article describes various COVID-19-related healthcare services, using the the applications of machine learning and LPWAN in improving the medical domain during the current COVID-19 pandemic. We validate our idea with the help of a case study that describes a way to reduce the spread of any pandemic using LPWAN technology and machine learning. The case study compares k-Nearest Neighbors (KNN) and trust-based algorithms for mitigating the flow of virus spread. The simulation results show the effectiveness of KNN for curtailing the COVID-19 spread.
