Internet of Things (IoT) and the Energy Sector

Abstract: Integration of renewable energy and optimization of energy use are key enablers of sustainable energy transitions and mitigating climate change. Modern technologies such the Internet of Things (IoT) offer a wide number of applications in the energy sector, i.e, in energy supply, transmission and distribution, and demand. IoT can be employed for improving energy efficiency, increasing the share of renewable energy, and reducing environmental impacts of the energy use. This paper reviews the existing literature … Show more

“…For instance, an IoT gateway device allows the data to be routed through the IoT network and bi-directional communication (i.e., device-to-gateway and gateway-to-cloud) [136,138,140]. SG, ESN, and IoT nodes may be the potential solution to tomorrow's global energy crisis [142]. The existing SG framework, combined with IoT and EI, can be applied to numerous energy-related applications.…”

“…One of SG's critical components is continuous connectivity and communication, which provides equipped devices with these capabilities. In Reference [143], Kabalci SG, ESN, and IoT nodes may be the potential solution to tomorrow's global energy crisis [142]. The existing SG framework, combined with IoT and EI, can be applied to numerous energy-related applications.…”

“…The proposed scheme was tested using simulation, and results reveal that the proposed scheme provides significant energy saving. According to [37], IoT helps to improve energy efficiency, reduce negative environmental impacts and increasing renewable energy share. This paper generally provides a detailed survey on IoT applications in energy and particularly in smart grid context.…”

“…Turning the current power grid into an IoT technology-dependent one means that a large number of data are harvested from the physical assets' sensors and the cyber assets' controllers. This will greatly affect our current understanding of the energy sector [6][7][8][9][10][11][12]. An example of the sensors and data shared in a microgrid can be found in [13], where energy management as a cloud service was explored to provide a control platform for a residential microgrid.…”
