Interoception: A Multi-Sensory Foundation of Participation in Daily Life

Abstract: The purpose of this article is to examine evidence that broadens the clinical perspective on interoception as an imperative consideration for individuals with mental health and sensory processing challenges. The central supposition is that interoception is broader than just signals from the viscera. Rather, interoception refers to perceptions of bodily signals and bodily states that construct a subjective representation of the experience. These representations are then utilized for categorizing the sensory att… Show more

“…In particular, male participants reported higher values on the not worrying and trusting dimensions, whereas female participants reported higher scores on emotional awareness and body listening. Additionally, children’s ability to handle internal body cues based on interoceptive awareness typically improves as they grow and develop ( Schmitt and Schoen, 2022 ). In particular, children are expected to present five stages of maturing of their interoceptive awareness capacity: (i) Noticing—the child notices that the interoceptive sensation is occurring; (ii) Naming—the child is able to label and describe the interoceptive sensation; (iii) Linking—the child is able to connect an emotions to the interoceptive sensation; (iv) Understanding and recognising the impact—the child understands the impact of the interoceptive sensation and this requires the second-order cognitive skills of reasoning, reflection, organization and planning; (v) Handling, managing and coping—the child needs to be able to cope with the interoceptive sensation and regulate it ( Cheung et al, 2023 ).…”

“…Interestingly, most case members described auditory and visual stimuli as antecedents to BoC in many of their patients. This points to a secondary, sensory‐based body dysfunction after ABI, which can be conceptualised within the International Classification of Function (Schmitt & Schoen, 2022; World Health Organization, 2001).…”

“…proprioceptive drift -the felt location of one's hand relative to the rubber hand), suggesting abnormalities in multisensory integration. A problem with interoceptive multisensory processing may produce mistrust of the body, given suggestions that interoception provides a foundation for trusting the body to provide consistent, relevant sensations that ensure stability in a changing environment (Schmitt and Schoen, 2022). Unfortunately, Kaplan et al (2014) did not include a specific interoceptive component in their paradigm, unlike more recent rubber hand illusions studies (Crucianelli et al, 2017;Ponzo et al, 2018Ponzo et al, , 2019.…”
