Interoperability models in digital libraries: an overview

Abstract: PurposeThe purpose of this paper is to provide an overview of the existing interoperability models in digital libraries and to introduce related projects in each model.Design/methodology/approachThe study starts from searching various databases with a combination of important keywords in the field, such as interoperability, digital library, meta‐searching and cross‐searching. The study follows up with describing related digital library projects in the field of technical interoperability. The projects are descr… Show more

“…This results in the cross-communication process in a closed environment. The inner communication is facilitated through some trusted/ credible nodes acting as notaries to verify whether a specific event has happened on one chain and taken agreed action on another chain [4,[19][20][21].  A decentralized approach assumes that the cross-communication occurs automatically at a protocol level through smart contracts in a distributed environment.…”

“…IRs are by their nature usually designed to be OA and interoperable and a primary goal is to be able to link up with other similar archives (Crow, 2002). Several studies (Alipour-Hafezi, Horri, Shiri, & Ghaebi, 2010;Eaton, 2008;Genoni, 2004;Ginsparg, Luce, & Van de Sompel, 1999;Horwood, Sullivan, Fig. 4: Embargo policy.…”

“…Both implement what AlipourHafezi et al term a federated model in the context of search interoperability, wherein providers agree that their services will conform to certain standard specifications. 17 The costs and adoption risk of this approach are low. Technologies such as OpenSearch occupy an abstraction layer above existing search infrastructure such as Solr.…”
