Interplay between intrinsic plasma rotation and magnetic island evolution in disruptive discharges

Abstract: The behavior of the intrinsic toroidal rotation of the plasma column during the growth and eventual saturation of m/n = 2/1 magnetic islands, triggered by programmed density rise, has been carefully investigated in disruptive discharges in TCABR. The results show that, as the island starts to grow and rotate at a speed larger than that of the plasma column, the angular frequency of the intrinsic toroidal rotation increases and that of the island decreases, following the expectation of synchronization. As the i… Show more

“…The TM amplitudes and phase velocities were measured by magnetic pick-up coils at the plasma boundary. The dominant TMs have poloidal mode number m = 1 with different toroidal mode numbers n. These modes co-rotate with the plasma [6,31], resembling the large TM amplitude case in the tokamak [32]. Each mode is resonant where the safety factor, q ≡ (rB φ )/(RB θ ) = m/n, where B φ and B θ are the equilibrium toroidal and poloidal fields.…”
