Interplay between Oral Hypoglycemic Medication Adherence and Quality of Life among Elderly Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus Patients

Abstract: A medication adherence rate of 48% was obtained among elderly T2DM patients treated in the primary care clinic. This study showed that HbA1c is a relevant tool to assess patient glycemic control and adherence. Sociodemographic characteristics were not statistically significantly associated with adherence. We reported a negative correlation between adherence and T2DM related emotional distress. The identified factors that relieve emotional distress of the elderly T2DM patients are similar with the western count… Show more

“…A thorough understanding of how medicines are used and the barriers to adherence are crucial to improving the quality use of medicine in older adults. Although numerous local and overseas studies have focused on medication use and its related problems among older adults in the hospital and primary care settings, little is known about those older adults living independently in the community . In addition, the few studies in the community setting have mainly been carried out overseas, and thus, it is difficult to extrapolate these existing data to the Malaysian setting given the differences in healthcare systems and patient preferences .…”

“…Sensitivity analyses around the inclusion of other factors in the model, including patients with high baseline HbA 1c (.10%) in the RW sample and varying assumptions about adherence and severity of diabetes among trial patients, did not alter conclusions regarding the efficacy gap between RW and RCT patients and the important role of medication adherence in explaining this gap. Previous RW studies have demonstrated sex and race/ethnicity differences in glycemic control among patients with type 2 diabetes, largely driven by differences in medication adherence (34)(35)(36). The inclusion of race and sex as variables in the current analysis slightly attenuated the effect of adherence on HbA 1c levels (sensitivity model 2 in Table 2).…”

“…From the moment of diagnosis to the repeated healthcare visits for medical follow-ups, T2DM patients are receiving repetitive messages for healthy lifestyles and on the importance of MA. Rather than a norm, non-MA could well be the experience of many T2DM patients [1,3]. Hence, psychological burden from self and psychosocial stresses from significant others could become daily challenges to MA.…”
