Interplay of Structural Factors in Formation of Microphase-Separated or Microphase-Mixed Structures of Polyurethanes Revealed by Solid-State NMR and Dielectric Spectroscopy

Abstract: A set of aromatic-oxyaliphatic polyurethanes (PUs) with different mass fractions of components also containing fluorinated fragments was synthesized and studied using various solid-state NMR techniques and dielectric spectroscopy. In contrast to the common model suggested by Cooper and Tobolsky in 1966, the rigid domains of microphase separated PUs are formed, not only by units containing urethane bonds, but also by oxyethylene fragments that form a common rigid phase. The urethane bonds and oxyethylene fragme… Show more

“…Hence, in the case of BCP II the presence of large fraction of PFMS segments in rigid domains leads to their higher diameter in comparison with those of rigid domains I and to an increase of the fraction of such domains. A similar situation has been observed by us in a study of polyurethanes, which are multiblock copolymers with alternating hard and soft segments [ 17 ]. These BSPs form cylindrical rigid domains.…”

“…Hence, fluorine-containing PFMS chains have a more tendency to prevent the dissolution of silicon-aromatic ladder-like blocks than PDMS chains. We observed a similar effect in the case of aromatic–aliphatic polyurethanes containing perfluorinated ethylene oxide units [ 17 ].…”

“…For this purpose, we used the parameter λ DPS (the ratio of hydrogen bonded units to all urethane units which defined as the degree of phase separation) as was described previously. 17 The obtained data are given in Table 1. As one can see, the introduction of ladder-like component leads to an increase of degree of phase separation.…”

“…The H-bond formed by the intermolecular polymer chain of SF and PEO and the intramolecular polymer chain of SF. The PEO main chain contains the oxygen atom, and it can form a H-bond between −NH groups and C–O–C ether linkage. Thus, the new chemical shift at 92.70 ppm was interpreted as the formation of the intermolecular H-bonding of SF and PEO. , …”
