Interpretable Statistical Tests for Growth Comparisons using Parameters in the von Bertalanffy Equation

Abstract: Likelihood ratio, t-, univariate χ2-, and T2-tests have been proposed to compare von Bertalanffy parameters among stocks. As commonly applied, all of these tests are approximate, with the accuracy of each dependent on the nonlinearity of the von Bertalanffy equation, sample size, and if present, the degree of heterogeneity in the error variances. An empirical comparison of these procedures shows that the likelihood ratio test often differs in outcome from the others. Analysis of the conflicting cases by confid… Show more

“…Sexes were also analyzed separately because they grow at different rates (Murphy and Taylor, 1990;Murphy and McMichael, 2003;Nieland et al, 2002). To compare the parameters of our actual and back-calculated VBGEs with ADCNR's previously estimated parameters from 1995-96 and 2000-06, we used a likelihood ratio test using Solver function in Microsoft Excel 2007 (Kimura, 1980;Cerrato, 1990;Haddon, 2000). For all tests except the Bonferroni post hoc analysis, P-values were considered significant at the a , 0.05 level.…”

“…The criteria used to validate a cohort were the biological coherence with the life cycle of the species (the coherent estimate of longevity based on the duration of a cohort in time and growth parameter values suggested in the literature) (SIMÕES et al, 2013a). A comparison of the growth curves was performed using an F test (p = 0.05), according to CERRATO (1990).…”
