Interpretation of a Planar Langmuir Probe Current — Voltage Characteristic in a Strong Magnetic Field

Abstract: A theory of current collection by a planar Langmuir probe in a strong magnetic field with the direction perpendicular to the probe surface based on the models of STANGEBY (J. Phys. D: Appl. Phys. 15 (1982) 1007) and STANOJEVIC et al. (Contrib. Plasma Phys. 33 (1993) 241) is presented. Besides the possibility of deriving the plasma density, no, the electron temperature, T,, and the cross-field diffusion coefficient, D,, from the measured probe characteristic reported in the previous studies, experiments in a… Show more

“…Thus, in general, the rate of electron cross-field transport required to sustain the discharge in a low-power thruster may be different from that in kilowatt thrusters. In other types of low-temperature magnetized laboratory plasmas, variation of the electron cross-field diffusion rate with applied magnetic field B occurs indeed: For example, in [22], cross-field diffusion coefficient D ⊥ was observed to approach the Bohm value when B was greater than 2-3 kG, while in B<1 kG case D ⊥ was much smaller than the Bohm value.…”

“…Stanojevic and co-workers further developed Stangeby's model in strongly magnetized, low temperature, Ar discharge plasmas. 4,5 In their improved model, Stanojevic and co-workers divided the whole perturbed region near the probe into two subregions: a ''free-fall region'' with the characteristic scale length of the collision mean free path, and a long ''interaction region'' where macroscopic quasineutrality is conserved by ambipolar current collection. From the series of measurements, they calculated the cross-field diffusion coefficient as approaching the corresponding D Ќ Bohm when B was greater than 2-3 kG.…”

“…However, the ion and electron currents to a floating probe are insensitive to the current reduction factor , and size of the probe in the presence of a magnetic field (Stangeby 1982; Stanojević et al. 1994). In this work, a planar Langmuir probe at floating potential has been employed for the detection of the IAWs.…”
