Interpretation of measured red cell mass and plasma volume in adults: Expert Panel on Radionuclides of the International Council for Standardization in Haematology

Abstract: Summary. Four European centres provided height and weight data on 202 males and 204 females undergoing red cell mass (RCM) and plasma volume (PV) measurements. For these populations, the RCM and PV predictions by the various published methods were compared. It was shown clearly that predictions based solely on body weight were inappropriate, particularly because approximately half of the male and female populations could be regarded as overweight or obese. Although there was reasonable agreement in the predict… Show more

“…Measured plasma volume was expressed according to the calculated lean body mass [men: 1.10·weight Ϫ 128·(weight 2 /100·height 2 ), women: 1.07·weight Ϫ 148·(weight 2 /100·height 2 ) (24)]. A predicted plasma volume was calculated based on sex, body weight, and height (36).…”

“…These results indicate that bone marrow histopathology on its own is not reliable to differentiate between ET and PV but appeared to be a powerful tool to differentiate ET and PV from all variants of primary or secondary erythrocytosis and reactive thrombocytosis with a sensitivity and specificity near to 100% [5,6] [17]. Hb levels are normal in PT and elevated in PV [16]. Leukocytes were normal or elevated in PT and PV.…”

“…The clinical features of erythromelalgia and transient neurologic and ocular ischemic manifestations caused by platelet-mediated arteriolar inflammation and thrombosis in thrombocythemia in 26 MPN (ET and PV cases A in Table 4) have been reported in great detail [1][2][3]. Eleven of 14 ET patients had platelet counts between 400 and 1000 × 10 thrombocythemia, (30 ET and 20 PV) are described in great detail [16]. The peripheral blood findings in 30 ET (primary thrombocythemia; PT) and 20 PV seen between 1975 and 1985 are shown in Figure 1 [17].…”

“…Trichloroacetic acid-precipitable (proteinbound) radioactivity in plasma was used to measure the percentage of the injected dose still present in the vascular compartment, by using a calculated estimate of the plasma volume (16). The blood volume (in mL) was calculated by applying an algorithm using sex, body weight (in kg), and height (in m) (17): male blood volume 5 (366.9 · height 3 ) 1 (32.19 · weight) 1 604, and female blood volume 5 (356.1 · height 3 ) 1 (33.08 · weight) 1 183.3.…”
