Interpretation of panoramic radiographs

Abstract: Panoramic radiography has become a commonly used imaging modality in dental practice and can be a valuable diagnostic tool in the dentist's armamentarium. However, the panoramic image is a complex projection of the jaws with multiple superimpositions and distortions which may be exacerbated by technical errors in image acquisition. Furthermore, the panoramic radiograph depicts numerous anatomic structures outside of the jaws which may create additional interpretation challenges. Successful interpretation of pa… Show more

“…Fortunately, MCW is measured approximately in this plane, and so long as careful attention is given to positioning during radiography, it is likely that the distortional effects would have little influence on the cortical measurement (Devlin and Horner 2002). In addition, to avoid observer variability, a systematic approach is recommended for the interpretation of this image type (Perschbacher 2012).…”

“…Understanding the technique of panoramic radiography as well as a good knowledge of anatomy is important for accurate diagnosis. 1 A request was made for CBCT imaging of the lower left third molar to assess its relationship to the inferior alveolar canal. The panoramic radiograph suggested an intimate relationship.…”

“…Panoramic imaging is a tomography, where a specific pre-determined plane is clearly demonstrated, while other hard tissue structures are often blurred and superimposed at various levels. The panoramic image is a complex projection of the mandibular bones and their surrounding structure with multiple superimpositions and distortions which may be exacerbated by technical errors in image acquisition (Perschbacher, 2012).…”
