This study reports on analyses of natural, geologic CO2 migration paths in Farnsworth Oil Field, northern Texas, where CO2 was injected into the Pennsylvanian Morrow B reservoir as part of enhanced oil recovery and carbon sequestration efforts. We interpret 2D and 3D seismic reflection datasets of the study site, which is located on the western flank of the Anadarko basin, and compare our seismic interpretations with results from a tracer study. Petroleum system models are developed to understand the petroleum system and petroleum- and CO2-migration pathways. We find no evidence of seismically resolvable faults in Farnsworth Field, but interpret a karst structure, erosional structures, and incised valleys. These interpretations are compared with results of a Morrow B well-to-well tracer study that suggests that inter-well flow is up-dip or lateral. Southeastward fluid flow is inhibited by dip direction, thinning, and draping of the Morrow B reservoir over a deeper, eroded formation. Petroleum system models predict a deep basin-ward increase in temperature and maturation of the source rocks. In the northwestern Anadarko Basin, petroleum migration was generally up-dip with local exceptions; the Morrow B sandstone was likely charged by formations both below and overlying the reservoir rock. Based on this analysis, we conclude that CO2 escape in Farnsworth Field via geologic pathways such as tectonic faults is unlikely. Abandoned or aged wellbores remain a risk for CO2 escape from the reservoir formation and deserve further monitoring and research.

A field‐scale carbon dioxide (CO2) injection pilot project was conducted by the Southeast Regional Carbon Sequestration Partnership (SECARB) at Cranfield, Mississippi. Two associated campaigns in 2009 and 2010 were carried out to co‐inject perfluorocarbon tracers (PFTs) and sulfur hexafluoride (SF6) with CO2. Tracers in gas samples from two observation wells were analyzed to construct breakthrough curves. In this work, we present the field data and numerical modeling of the flow and transport of CO2, brine, and tracers. A high‐resolution static model of the formation geology in the detailed area study (DAS) was used to capture the impact of connected flow pathways created by fluvial channels on breakthrough curves and breakthrough times of PFTs and SF6 tracers. We use the cubic‐plus‐association (CPA) equation of state, which takes into account the polar nature of water molecules, to describe the phase behavior of CO2–brine‐tracer mixtures. Our simulated results show good agreement for the 2009 tracer campaign in Cranfield, while a larger discrepancy emerges by 2010. The combination of multiple tracer injection pulses with detailed numerical simulations proves to be a powerful tool in constraining both formation properties and how complex flow paths develop over time. © 2018 Society of Chemical Industry and John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

We present a computational framework for fast monitoring of fault stability and ground deformation in multiphase geomechanics and demonstrate its efficacy for a carbon sequestration--enhanced oil recovery case study. The staggered solution algorithm for the coupled problem is augmented with a feature that allows for the flow and geomechanics sub-problems to be solved on different unstructured tetrahedral grids. For the field scale problem, the geomechanics grid goes all the way to the free surface while the flow grid is truncated at a depth above which the layers are impermeable. This framework avoids the unnecessary computational burden associated with equilibrating the initial pressure solution in the overburden, allows for a study of the critical interaction between overburden and faults, allows for fast renditions of ground deformation, and allows a choice of resolution for the flow and geomechanics grids independently to capture disparate length scales of the underlying physics.
