Objective: To identify differences among faculty members in various health professional training programs in perceived benefits and challenges of implementing interprofessional education (IPE). Methods: A 19-item survey using a 5-point Likert scale was administered to faculty members across different health disciplines at a west coast, multicollege university with osteopathic medicine, pharmacy, and physician assistant programs. Results: Sixty-two of 103 surveys (60.2%) were included in the study. Faculty members generally agreed that there were benefits of IPE on patient outcomes and that implementing IPE was feasible. However, group differences existed in belief that IPE improves care efficiency (p50.001) and promotes team-based learning (p50.001). Program divergence was also seen in frequency of stressing importance of IPE (p50.009), preference for more IPE opportunities (p50.041), and support (p50.002) within respective college for IPE. Conclusions: Despite consensus among faculty members from 3 disciplines that IPE is invaluable to their curricula and training of health care students, important program level differences existed that would likely need to be addressed in advance IPE initiatives.

Recolección de datos, desarrollado con el Cuestionario de Actitudes de Seguridad con 33 profesionales, se llevó a cabo en agosto y septiembre de 2013. Evaluadas 37 actitudes entre las seis dimensiones de la cultura de seguridad del paciente. Se utilizó estadística descriptiva e inferencial, con la realización de las pruebas de ANOVA y Kruskal-Wallis, considerando signifi cativo p-valor de 0,05 o menos. Resultados: Las actitudes en relación a la dimensión "satisfacción en el trabajo" fueron positivos para la cultura de seguridad del paciente con diferencia signifi caba entre los profesionales de esta dimensión. Conclusión: Es necesario fortalecer las actitudes de los profesionales para la seguridad de los pacientes en la unidad investigada. Palabras clave: Cultura organizacional. Seguridad del paciente. Objective. To examine the effectiveness of simulated learning modules (SLMs) encompassing EXcellence in Cultural Experiential Learning and Leadership (EXCELL) core competencies in enhancing pharmacy students' professional communication skills. Methods. Students completed three hours of preparatory lectures and eight hours of workshops comprising six SLMs themed around pharmacy practice and pharmacy placements. Each SLM comprised role-plays with actors, facilitation using EXCELL Social Interaction Maps (SIMs), and debriefing. Evaluations of SLMs included quantitative and qualitative survey responses collected before, during and after workshops, and after placements. Facilitators reflected on SLMs as a pedagogic modality. Results. Student feedback was positive about SLMs as an effective learning tool. The majority indicated areas of new learning and found SLMs enhanced their professional skills and confidence. Facilitator feedback was positive, and suggested SLM optimization strategies. Conclusion. Student and teaching team recommendations will inform future curriculum development including the optimization of SLMs in pharmacy education.

Abstract: Effective team communication is important in patient safety. We demonstrate positive attitudinal and knowledge effects in a large-scale interprofessional TeamSTEPPS-based training involving four student professions.
