Interrater Reliability of the Functional Movement Screen

Abstract: The Functional Movement Screen (FMS) is a series of 7 tests that categorize fundamental movement. Each test is scored on an ordinal scale with 4 categories. The purpose of this study was to determine the interrater reliability of the FMS. Forty healthy subjects were videotaped while performing the FMS. The videos were independently scored by 4 raters, including 2 experts who instruct FMS training courses and 2 novices who completed a standardized training course on the FMS. Interrater reliability was analyzed … Show more

“…Our results are in agreement with previous research on FMS reliability. Minick et al found significant to good inter-rater agreement on each FMS component scores when compared 2 beginners and 2 experts [17]. Moreover, the finding of this study indicated that right in-line lunge task had the minimum reliability and right active leg raise task, the maximum reliability.…”

“…Schneiders et al reported the high reliability between two examiners with the similar level of experience. Also, Minick et al have reported the high reliability between raters with the same level of experience [5,17]. Smith et al have examined reliability of FMS scoring among participants with various levels of experience and obtained high reliability [18].…”

“…This method was developed with the application of multiple regression equations containing information on the weight, height, sex, age and lifestyle habits related to CRF. When compared to the maximal tests, the results are less accurate, however, when compared to submaximal tests presents similar estimate of power and greater applicability in more numerous sample groups 8 . The assessment of the CRF is an important physiological indicator of the functional capacity among elderly 9 .…”

“…In this context, functional training (FT) appears as an option to improve the quality of movement used in ADLs and to stimulate the different components of physical fitness in the elderly 5,8 . This method consists in the application of integrated, multi-joint and multiplanar exercises aimed at improving movements, core strength gains and neuromuscular efficiency to the specific needs of each individual 9 .…”
