This article describes a particular way developed by employees to respond to the constraints of a very restrictive manufacturing plant: the mutual cooperation. Facing a very strict organizational context, the production workers can only rely on themselves to cope with the constraints of work. In this context, a complex system of strategies is deployed, resulting in a work environment governed by the sense of collaboration and mutual cooperation. The objectives of the implemented strategies, however, go beyond the attempts to reduce the work overload. They may be linked to a way of maintaining high levels of productivity and a way for workers to keep their jobs. We hope to contribute, through this study, to the general knowledge of the strategies developed by workers in production lines in order to minimize the pains.

Production equipment designers must ensure the health and safety of future users; in this regard, they augment requirements for standardizing and controlling operator work. This contrasts with the ergonomic view of the activity, which recommends leaving operators leeway (margins for manoeuvre) in performing their task, while safeguarding their health. Following a brief analysis of design practices in the car industry, we detail how the Failure Modes and Effects Analysis (FMEA) approach is implemented in this sector. We then suggest an adaptation that enables designers to consider real work situations. This new protocol, namely, work situation FMEA, allows experience feedback to be used to defend the health standpoint during designer project reviews, which usually only address quality and performance issues. We subsequently illustrate the advantage of this approach using two examples of work situations at car parts manufacturers: the first from the literature and the second from an in-company industrial project.

ResumoIntrodução: a organização do trabalho não deve ser vista somente como a estrutura organizacional, mas deve considerar também a dinâmica configurada pelas interações entre os trabalhadores. Objetivo: apresentar os tipos de regulações desenvolvidas coletivamente por operadores de uma indústria de bebidas e desvelar como elas contribuem para a redução da carga de trabalho. Métodos: intervenção ergonômica realizada em ambiente industrial. Os procedimentos adotados foram qualitativos, combinando observações da atividade, entrevistas e técnicas de confrontação. Resultados: as principais estratégias dos trabalhadores para lidar com a sobrecarga de trabalho foram modificar a rotação de postos de trabalho, adotar um conjunto de regulações que buscam reduzir o tempo de trabalho nas tarefas consideradas mais penosas, cooperar com os colegas e buscar períodos de pausa na atividade. Conclusão: uma atividade coletiva pode ser considerada como uma articulação entre regulações quentes -ou as estratégias desenvolvidas pelos operadores na situação de trabalho -e regulações frias -ou a produção de regras e ferramentas de gestão pelos gestores da empresa. Por meio de um caso prático, foi possível verificar a necessidade de se partir das práticas de trabalho para estabelecer regras pertinentes, e não o inverso.
