Intersatellite-Link Demonstration Mission between CubeSOTA (LEO CubeSat) and ETS9-HICALI (GEO Satellite)

Abstract: LEO-to-GEO intersatellite links using laser communications bring important benefits to greatly enhance applications such as downloading big amounts of data from LEO satellites by using the GEO satellite as a relay. By using this strategy, the total availability of the LEO satellite increases from less than 1% if the data is downloaded directly to the ground up to about 60% if the data is relayed through GEO. The main drawback of using a GEO relay is that link budget is much more difficult to close due to the m… Show more

“…In the latter use case, the GEO satellite gives service to satellite users, which generally require transmitting large amounts of data to the ground. When high link availability is a critical requirement, using a relay satellite is a useful alternative to waiting to pass over an operational ground station [6]. HAPS or commercial airplanes are another possible user for the GEO relay.…”

“…O National Institute of Information and Communications Technology e a Universidade de Tóquio criaram uma missão entre o CubeSOTA, um CubeSat 3U em órbita LEO e o satélite ETS9-HICALI de órbita GEO, por meio da ISOC com taxa de transmissão de dados igual a 10 Gbps. O lançamento está previsto para 2023 27 .…”

“…As for the counterpart of the small LEO satellite, the National Institute of Communications and Information Technology, Japan, has been developing the GEO ETS-XI satellite equipped with High Speed Communication with Advanced Laser Instrument (HICALI). 8,9 With a 15-cm aperture and high receiver sensitivity, HICALI is suitable to be a relay node of the small satellite because it can compensate for the lack of the small satellite's resources. Based on the existing technologies, a link budget of the LEO-to-GEO laser communication is calculated for both the initial and communication phases.…”
