“…Yet it is precisely these medical interventions, which are nowadays common worldwide (Tell, 2015), that have been described by intersex people and activists as causing 'horrific physical and emotional scars' (Davis, 2015: 5) 3 through 'pathologization, shame, and deceit' (Orr, 2022: 3) and as 'human rights violations' (Carpenter, 2016: 74) imprinting a lifelong sense of being a 'freak' (Walsh, 2015: 120). Even though intersex traits rarely, if ever, cause medical issues by themselves (Davis, 2015;Dreger, 1999;Holmes, 2009;Kessler, 1998;Preves, 2003;Reis, 2021), they are nonetheless overwhelmingly construed as 'emergencies' (Karkazis, 2008: 96) requiring immediate medical intervention for the ostensible sake of the intersex person's health and well-being.…”
