-(The genus Allomyces (Blastocladiomycota) in the State of Piauí, Brazil). Brazilian ecosystems have been intensively exploited for agricultural expansion, however, the diversity of zoosporic organisms in such biomes remains little known. Therefore, further research is required to better understand their role within these ecosystems. Studies with zoosporic fungi were carried out and 22 Allomyces isolates were obtained from soil samples collected at six municipalities from Piauí State. After identification procedures, the taxa were grouped into four species: A. anomalus R. Emers., A. arbusculus E.J. Butler, A. moniliformis Coker & Braxton, and A. neomoniliformis Indoh. A. arbusculus had the highest rate of resistant sporangia viability (10%) and the largest geographical distribution in Piauí, occurring in seven out of ten sites studied. Countrywide, they occur within 14 municipalities from three states. Greater knowledge about the geographical distribution of Allomyces in Brazil is being pioneered in the State of Piauí. Novel information regarding the diversity and occurrence, as well as taxonomic characteristics of the isolates is presented herein.

S U M M A R YA stable, ultraviolet-induced, albino mutant of Blastodadiella emersonii Cantino and Hyatt is described. It differs from wild type in: (a), capacity to form brown resistant sporangia (RS), both as 2nd and 3rd generation RS in clones derived from 1st generation ordinary colourless (OC) plants, and as I st generation RS produced directly in response to exogenous bicarbonate; (b) the inhibition of growth by low concentrations of bicarbonate; (c) the longer generation time, stemming from a combination of decreased growth rate and delay in spore release until terminal sporangia have become unusually large; ( d ) the increased incapacity to discharge in situ on solid media with increasing temperatures above 23" ; (e), reduced motility of zoospores and increased tendency to become amoeboid and encyst prematurely; cf), certain changes in the fine structure and organization of mitochondria and their associated lipid sacs, y particles and the double membranes that surround nuclear caps and nuclei of spores chilled to low temperatures.

The hermaphroditic, haploid, sexual generation of the watermolds Allomyces macrogynus and A. arbuscula bear orange male gametangia and colorless female gametangia which discharge motile male and female gametes into an ambient liquid environment (1,8). The female gametes, beginning prior to their release from the gametangia, secrete sirenini, a sperm-attractant (3, 4), whose structure was recently established (6) and which is depicted in figure 1. The production of sirenin (7) was done with the almost entirely female isolate #F-1 (3) derived from a cross between A. macrogynus (n=28) and A. arbuscula (n=16) and the bioassay, during the time it was needed, with an almost entirely male isolate derived from the same cross. These particular hybrids have not been studied cytologically or genetically but the chromosome behavior of various crosses between the parents has been described (2).The purpose of this communication is to show that m-ale gametes from the parent species do respond chemotactically to sirenin which was synthesized by the female hybrid strain. At the same time, the experiments raise the possibility that there may be species-specific sirenins.
