Interspin Crossing and Reactivity

Abstract: The discussion of reaction mechanisms and pathways is usually based on a single potential energy surface: starting from the reactant minimum the reactive system moves through a transition state and proceeds further to intermediates and/or product minima. Although this concept represents only one aspect of chemical reactivity, it has proven to be a useful tool in rationalizing the greater part of reactions. The success of this concept and its justification, especially in organic chemistry, lies in the fact that… Show more

“…Generally it is assumed that this oxomanganese complex is the reaction product of the Mn III salen and the oxidant (e.g. 3-chloroperoxybenzoic acid (m-CPBA)), followed by oxygen atom transfer to the olefin either in a stepwise radical process [67,68] or via a metallaoxetane [69][70][71][72][73]. Alternatively, the Mn V -oxo species can be formed by the disproportionation of a bis(-oxo)Mn IV dimer [74].…”

“…For this particular reaction pathway, that takes place on two potential energy surfaces, the phenomenon called two-state reactivity (TSR), 62,63 was investigated. This phenomenon has been observed in numerous organic, inorganic, and organometallic reactions, 64,65 and for the rst time has been recently employed in the examination of antioxidative mechanisms. 44,66 The phenomenon involves the participation of spin-crossing effects for the elucidation of rate constants, branching ratios and reaction mechanisms.…”

“…Erhitzen mit DDQ in verschiedenen Lösungsmitteln oder Erhitzen mit 10 % Palladium auf Aktivkohle führte nicht zu den gewünschten Produkten. In Vorversuchen konnten die Hydrochloride von 7 auch durch Erhitzen mit Schwefel34 dehydriert werden. Diese Methode zeigte jedoch gegenüber der Dehydrierung mit DDQ keine Vorteile, da die Ausbeuten geringer waren.…”
