Interstitial hyperthermia of the prostate in combination with brachytherapy

Abstract: Early tolerance of IHT in combination with HDR brachytherapy is good. Further prospective clinical studies should focus on the effects of combining IHT with HDR brachytherapy and the influence of this adjuvant therapy on biochemical disease-free survival, local control and overall survival.

“…Likewise, reports of complications associated with HDRBT þ IHT are scarce. The group of patients which we analysed in two earlier articles published in 2013 and 2014 [17,18] largely overlaps with the patient group analysed in this work, thus obviating any comparative effort.…”

“…So far, no randomised phase III studies of prostate cancer treated with hyperthermia have been conducted. Most of the available publications concerning phase I and II studies refer to deep hyperthermia [2,[11][12][13]15] and transrectal hyperthermia [16], with only a few studies on interstitial hyperthermia [17][18][19][20].…”

“…The high prevalence of prostate cancer in the general population has led to exceptional changes in treatment during the past century, while the standard treatment for early prostate cancer is surgery or radiation therapy combined with hormone therapy. [ 1 2 ] In cases of recurrence of disease after failure of radiation therapy, optimal treatment remains unclear. [ 3 ] Several studies[ 3 4 ] have shown that hyperthermia combined with radiation appears as a promising therapy of locally advanced prostate cancer by enhancing the efficacy of treatment and survival rate of patients.…”
