Interventional Management of a Renal Cell Carcinoma by Radiofrequency Ablation with Tagging and Cooling

Abstract: Over the last few years, percutaneous radiofrequency (RF) ablation has been successfully established as a viable treatment modality for small peripheral renal cell carcinoma (RCC). This technique is limited by central tumor location and tumor size. We report the interventional management of a 5.3 cm mixed RCC with central and exophytic parts by combining the RF ablation with embolization, tagging, and retrograde, as well as anterograde cooling. The potential pitfalls of complex hybrid interventions for treatin… Show more

“…These measures allow a complete and yet safe RFA of central tumors that are located closely to the renal pelvis. 11,12 In contrast to RFA, the effectiveness of protective measures for MWA of central renal structures has, to our knowledge, not been investigated systematically.…”

“…9,10 For RFA, a number of protective measures have been established, such as antegrade or retrograde pyeloperfusion, which has been shown to be effective in protecting the renal pyelon while allowing treatment of adjacent central tumors. 11,12 However, for MWA, to the best of our knowledge, no such protective measures have been established, although the more efficient heat propagation in MWA compared with RFA would make such protection even more important.…”

“…Weiterhin gestatten sie, die Kosten der Patientenbehandlung zu senken. Zwei Ablationstechniken haben sich bei der Therapie des Nierenzellkarzinoms als am weitesten verbreitet durchgesetzt: die RFA [3,8,[11][12][13][16][17][18][19]25] und die Kryoablation [1]. Die RFA wird mittlerweile aufgrund ihrer hohen Effektivität und einfachen Handhabung weit häufiger durchgeführt als die Kryoablation.…”
