Interventions to Reduce Drug Use Among Methamphetamine Users at Risk for HIV

Abstract: Purpose of review.-This paper reports on the results of a study comparing two behavioral treatments for methamphetamine users. The outcomes was the effectiveness of the interventions in reducing meth use. The interventions were Contingency Management (CM) and Contingency Management plus Strengths-Based Case Management (CM/SBCM).Recent findings.-CM/SBCM was found to be associated with attending more sessions for people who reported being in a couple. Also, participants who earned more money in the first part of… Show more

“…Future efforts to refine these interventions may involve contingency management, which has been shown to be effective for treating stimulant use. [57][58][59] Finally, as in most simulation studies, the uncertainty quantification in this model is restricted to considering the stochasticity between model runs; the full range of model uncertainty, both due to the complexity of modeling human behavior and unforeseen developments in policy and treatment is likely much greater, and difficult to fully account for. 26,62 * Persons always adherent to ART experiencing imperfect adherence due to stimulant use are uniformly distributed across the three other categories (usually, sometimes, and never adherent).…”

“…Fourth, future iterations of the model may consider contingency management and related interventions useful for treating stimulant dependency. [56][57][58] This work begins to test empirically interventions in a simulation model designed for a YBMSM population. Future interventions, particularly culturally sensitive interventions for YBMSM who use stimulants are much needed, given their unique contexts of use, and the limited resources and safety nets for substance using YBMSM, relative to White populations.…”

“…For example, contingency management is effective at reducing cocaine use among patients in OAT [66] and in iOAT [12]. Both contingency management [67–69] and cognitive behavioural approaches [70,71] have also been shown to reduce methamphetamine use, however, evidence of the effectiveness of psychosocial interventions for methamphetamine use are lacking among OAT patients and thus warrant investigation in this population.…”
